The Thuya tree is small in stature but has massive roots. It is these roots and their outgrowths which are polished by artisans who have learned their craft through generations of experience. By using natural oils and lemon juice, the natural burled grain of the wood is shown to great effect and absolutely sparkles in the light. The nature of the wood and the standard of the craftsmanship make these truly unique gifts.
Traditionally large pieces of furniture were made out of the Thuya Tree, but this was very wasteful of the wood. By changing production to small giftware which uses all the wood, and by a vigorous replanting programme, this traditional craft can be a sustainable basis of the local economy.
